If your kids are anything like mine, their favorite things on TV are the silly songs that are played between the shows on Noggin and Sprout. You spend your days humming the melodic tunes or singing along with the nonsensical lyrics. Hey, anything’s better than Twinkle, Twinkle or the I Love You song, right? (Not hatin’ on Barney, I’m just sayin’)

Most days, I get completely sick of hearing kids’ music, so I turn on music for mama, knowing some of the lyrics aren’t exactly what my toddler and preschooler should be hearing. Staind and Pink are okay for me, but with the parrot-y stage that these kids are in, I’m probably making a huge mistake.

A week or so ago, my prayers were answered. I picked up a new follower on Twitter and did my due diligence by checking out their website. WOW! The lead singer of The Jimmies, a great kids band, had followed me. I poked around on the site for a bit, loved what I heard and headed straight back to Twitter to make friends. Before the night was over, I had The Jimmies new CD Make Your Own Someday on its way to me. I knew I just had to hear more.

When it arrived, I turned off the TV, popped in the CD, and waited to see my kids reactions. Both of them analyzed the new sound for about 10 seconds and starting dancing along to the beat. They’re starting to pick up the lyrics and sing along, as well as a toddler and a preschooler can. Their favorite is “Huptsha Huptsha” with its smooth Reggae sound. Bob Marley is frequently played around here, so its only natural I guess. My 2 1/2 yr old is starting to ask for the music, calling it “My DD.” Seriously, I think this is a CD that will be played until its worn out, over here.

I even enjoy listening to the songs, which speaks volumes. I’m a little bit of a music snob, though I love all genres. This band has a great indie sound that even grownups can enjoy, plus lyrics that are just plain fun for the kids. I’ve been catching myself rocking out to fun songs like “Its Cool To Be Uncool” and “Bedhead.” I am so excited to have found something that we can all really enjoy together. If The Jimmies don’t show up on Noggin or Sprout before long, whoever picks their music needs to be fired!

Ashley, the lead singer of The Jimmies, has been kind enough to give me another copy of Make Your Own Someday to give away to one lucky reader. This would be a great stocking stuffer for any little music lover in your life and you should get it in time for Christmas!
