premium-matress-ccFor as long as I can remember, I have had allergies. The biggest culprits for me are dust, pollen and mildew, most of which are present all year round. I have woken up nearly every morning of my life with a stuffy nose, crusty eyes and a sore throat, to varying degrees. Allergies are a way of life for me and I have become accustomed to how rotten they make me feel and have learned to live with it. Hubby is the same way, sniffling and coughing all night long from his allergies.

When the people from Protect-A-Bed offered me an allergen-reducing water proof mattress cover and pillow protector to try, I was a little skeptical, but said yes. I figured it certainly couldn’t hurt to try something new. I received them just after New Years, but held off on my review for a bit, since we were all dealing with nasty colds.

My biggest reservation on trying a mattress cover for my and hubby’s bed was my memories of those crunchy plastic covers that my mom used on our beds when we were little. They served their purpose, keeping us from ruining our mattresses as young children when “accidents” happened at night, but that crackling, crunchy sound when I crawled into bed or rolled over will forever be stuck in my mind. I steeled myself when I opened the Protect-A-Bed cover, only to be pleasantly surprised that even though it was waterproof, it was very soft and not plastic-y at all. I don’t even notice that I have a cover on the bed when I crawl in or move around on the bed. They go on just like a fitted sheet and can be washed and dried with your other linens.

The real surprise came after our colds had passed and we were able to experience the effects of the protectors. Hubby has always coughed in his sleep, to a point where it would sometimes wake me (and him) up. Over the past week, I have noticed that he is coughing much less and sleeping a lot more soundly. My nighttime allergies have also improved drastically. While I’m still a touch stuffy, I haven’t been waking up with a sore throat or any eye allergy problems and I have been sleeping much deeper. Ok, I’ll admit it – I have started drooling in my sleep, I sleep so well. Thank goodness for that pillow protector!

For us, the Protect-A-Bed products have been quite effective in reducing the affects of our nighttime allergies and the cover has even saved our mattress from the kids’ stomach flu last week. I am seriously considering purchasing crib mattress covers for the little ones and possibly a mattress encasement for my oldest, as he has nasty nighttime allergies, too.

Protect-A-Bed has also given me the opportunity to give away one of their amazing mattress covers and a pillow protector to one of my readers. The winner can choose from the Allerzip Mattress Protector, the Premium Mattress Cover, or the Crib Mattress Protector, in their choice of size.
