I always have been, and always will be, a huge fan of board games. Some of my favorite childhood memories come from Sunday dinners at my grandma’s house, which were followed by a massive game of Uno. It wasn’t unusual for ten or twelve of us to sit around the table, talking and laughing, teasing and goading each other over making someone “Draw Four” when they were just about to call Uno. These are the memories that stick with me, reminding me of a time when life was simple and fun.
We played board games and card games regularly at home, too. Though we didn’t have an official game night, it was rare that we were denied when we asked our parents to play a game with us on a rainy day or a winter evening. Some family favorites were Monopoly, Pictionary, Rummikub and Yahtzee. My dad even taught us to play 5 Card Draw poker as kids, betting with pennies from the big cast iron change pot he kept.
While the two littlest ones are still young to play many structured games, we do regularly play with the older two. Hubby has a collection of different Monopoly versions, and we add a game or two to our collection every year, at Christmas. I love the fun we have when playing board games can only hope that I am helping the kids to create memories as strong as the ones that I have from my own childhood.
TimetoPlayMag has recently launched a campaign to bring back Family Game Night. As economic times are tough all over, they are encouraging people to dust off their collection of board games and have a night of low-cost fun at home. Visit their Family Game Night page to see their suggestions of new games and well-known classics that you can enjoy with your family and friends.
To kick off their campaign, they have enlisted the help of ResourcefulMommy and her famous Twitter parties, holding a Sitewarming launch on Twitter, this Friday, February 27th. They will be talking toys and games with Jim Silver, editor of TimetoPlayMag and there will be tons of great prizes given away.
If you would like to join in the Twitter party fun, simply visit ResourcefulMommy’s blog and RSVP to enter to win the door prizes, then tweet with us on Friday night using the #timetoplay hashtag. To enter to win the grand prize, which includes a collection of five fun board games, simply blog about the Family Game Night Twitter Party, linking to Timeto PlayMag’s Family Game Night page, and fill out the entry form on ResourcefulMommy’s blog, linking back to your own post.
In the meantime, let’s talk games right here! Do you have any special memories of game nights with your own family? What are some of your favorite board games?
