I’ll be the first to admit I’m a total briber when it comes to my kids…always have been, always will be. Don’t waste your time lecturing me, I was bribed for good behavior and I turned out just fine. Sorta. (Shut up, I know what some of you are thinking)
Anyway, today’s reason for bribery was a pretty good one. I was invited to take part in a conference call with the Food Network. It was featuring the host of the Food Network Challenges, Keegan Gerhard. A post on that is coming soon. But you can figure, no one wanted to hear my wild boys screaming in the background.
With these two, I’ve found the best bribes are food and videos, so I popped in their newest Thomas DVD and consistently passed out juice, cheese, candy and Doritos every few minutes through the 40 minutes I was on the phone. Yeah, I know…bad mom. Judge me, go ahead.
During the call, the bribes worked just fine, except for during the very second I was supposed to be asking my first question. There was a moment of both kids screaming in stereo as soon as I was called on, but nothing a couple of Gummy Savers couldn’t fix.
The FAIL started several hours later, when it was time for dinner. The kids were still full from their several treats and ate almost nothing. Plus, they were bouncing off the walls from all the junk. Bedtime took well over an hour and resulted in me falling asleep during my regular nightly work time, which is why it’s almost 3 AM and I’m here writing a post. And here is where I will likely be for the rest of the night, finishing the job I was supposed to be doing after they went to bed.
Granted the food bribes got me through what I needed them to, I think I need a new strategy for the next go-round. What do you think? Ever have a bribe that worked come back to bite you later on?
