outdoor-challengeThese days, between pollen counts that are out of this world and the swarm of mosquitoes that has taken up residence in my front yard, getting outside is a bit of a challenge for me. The kids don’t seem to care about my suffering, however. They want fresh air and sunshine whenever they get a chance and who am I to tell them no?

Crayola has issued a challenge to parents everywhere this summer, asking us to leave the comfort of our air conditioning and get outside with the kids — EVERY DAY! They have teamed up with Dan O’Brien, Olympic Gold Medalist, to encourage families to get outside this May, during National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and throughout the entire summer! As a part of the challenge kick off, I was given some great Crayola outdoor play products to review.

The package included:

crayons

Sidewalk Crayons offer kids more than pretty pastels to create outdoor masterpieces. Once reserved for bringing coloring books to life, this new technology offers the richest, brightest, boldest colors for creating extraordinary outdoor artwork. The difference is striking, as the smooth, creamy colors lay down on driveways and sidewalks with unmatched brightness. For children 4 and up, suggested retail price is $4.99 for a set of 15 colors.

rake

• The Rainbow Rake is a fun new way to create chalk messages and designs! Kids can adjust the arms for close lines or far-apart lines; use the rake to write giant messages and draw swirling, swooping lines! For children 4 and up, suggested retail price is $11.99 for one rake and 5 pieces of chalk.

3dkit

• Kids can watch their art come to life with the 3D Jungle Safari Activity Set. Create a jungle safari, put on the 3D glasses and kids will feel like they are in the jungle! The set includes 1 bottle of sidewalk paint (7 fl. oz.), a paint brush, 1 pair of 3D glasses, 8 dual-ended sidewalk chalk sticks, 4 giant stencils and 1 how-to book. For children 6 and up, the suggested retail price is $13.99.

The little boys and I took our goodies outside and had a blast decorating the driveway. The Rainbow Rake was absolutely awesome, and K was using it to make racetracks for his little cars. D just drug it around, saying “Pretty! Pretty!” Definitely a fun find for the preschool set.

The colors of the Sidewalk Crayons were absolutely unbelievable. Compared to the cheapy sidewalk chalk I usually buy, this stuff was amazing! They are also much more durable than some brands, even standing up to being dropped. (Yeah, that would have been me)

The ultimate hit was the 3D Jungle Safari Activity set, though. After drawing on the driveaway with the chalk, I handed the glasses over to K and all he could say was “whhooooaaaa!” It looks like your drawings are popping right of the pavement! Very awesome! The sidewalk paint was pretty neat too, with a very vibrant green color. My only suggestion with that is to make sure you’re working in a clean area with the paint. Our driveway is a bit dirty and the brush collected quite a bit of gunk, but it was easily rinsed off.
