Have you ever been hungry? No, I’m not talking about “Whoops! I skipped lunch and I could eat a horse for dinner!” kind of hungry. I mean the kind of hungry where you can’t remember when or what you last ate, and you aren’t sure exactly where your next meal was coming from.
Every day, more than 36 million Americans truly are hungry – including 2 million senior citizens and 12 million children. To me, those numbers are shocking and heartbreaking. Look at your grandma, then look at your kids. Imagine them living in a place where they had nothing to eat, or meals were few and far between. Every day, millions of helpless people are in that exact situation.
10 years ago, ShopRite grocery stores decided to take the initiative to fight hunger in the communities served by their stores. The ShopRite Partners In Caring program works alongside more than 50 food manufacturers, including General Mills, to provide donations to food banks and other similar organizations, in states served by ShopRite.
Here in Delaware, there are more than a dozen organizations that the Partners In Caring program supports. These organizations work to feed the babies, children, parents, and seniors who live in that fear of not knowing that they can afford to buy the food they need to make it through the day. In Delaware, that is 7.8 percent of our population.
As a part of the Partners In Caring program, ShopRite and General Mills have created the Bloggers in Caring program, teaming up with 100 bloggers across DE, MD, NJ, CT, PA and NY to put food in food banks in all of our home states. For every comment I receive on this post, up to 30 comments, a box of cereal will be donated to a Delaware food bank. Please take a moment and make a comment to help feed a hungry person.
You can visit the Partners in Caring website to find out more information about this fantastic program, or to donate online to feed a hungry family. Just a donation of $1 is enough to put 10 pounds of food in a food bank. Think about the impact that could have, if everyone just did a little.
